Class of 2020 graduation

Dear Montclair High School Seniors and Families,

I am writing to provide clarification regarding the Class of 2020 graduation. The decision to move to a virtual graduation ceremony was made in light of the current orders regarding stay-at-home orders, social distancing requirements, and restrictions on large gatherings forwarded by Governor Murphy and the New Jersey Board of Education. The virtual graduation will take place on the same dates and times as the already scheduled Class of 2020 Graduation to take place on June 24, 2020.

To the extent possible, the virtual graduation ceremony will replicate as many components of an in-person graduation ceremony, including the processional, student speeches along with honors and student recognition.  In order to capture these moments, we are asking graduates full participation in the process of collecting personal photos and videos for the essential elements of the graduation ceremony, as well as those from friends and families.

The ceremony will be streamed for families to view from the comfort and safety of their own homes, details on how to access will follow.

We are also in the process of developing a plan for the distribution of caps and gowns, yearbooks and diplomas.

Although we know an in-person ceremony is everybody’s preference, in order to provide each student the opportunity to be recognized at this significant milestone, our administration has acted to move forward with the virtual platforms afforded us. The students were also surveyed on the possibility of having a later graduation, either in the late summer, fall, or next spring. The results were quite favorable in regard to the late summer graduation, but we fear that social distancing practices and restrictions on large gatherings will still be in place.

As we move forward with planning and identifying details for the virtual graduation ceremony, we will continue to communicate with students and families as the details emerge.

Sincerely,

Reginald Clark
Assistant Principal
