The Montclair Guidance Department encourages all seniors to investigate scholarship opportunities. National scholarships can be searched through one of any number of online scholarship search services, such as Fastweb or Chegg. Below is a list of useful websites.

Local/Regional Scholarships 

For a list of local or regional scholarships, please see below. The list is updated periodically as scholarships are received in the MHS Guidance Center. Please note, all scholarships that require a paper application are available  in the Guidance Center (Main Building, first floor). 


The Montclair African-American Heritage Foundation (MAAHF) is offering scholarships to eligible seniors for the coming 2019-2020 school year.  Scholarship applications can be found on the MAAHF website. Click "Celebrating Our Youth" and scroll down for the application.

The James B. Nye Scholarship offers a $2500 award for seniors who are attending a 2 or 4 year college and are passionate about their education and outside interests, just as Mr. Nye was.  Financial need will be considered. Please see the Guidance Website under Scholarships to apply. Deadline: April 29th. Please submit completed applications to Ms. Iovine in the Guidance Department.


The New Jersey Chapter of the National Association of Water Companies Association is offering two $2,500 scholarships to high school students who will be attending a New Jersey college or university and are interested in the water utility industry or any related field. The scholarship application may be a obtained from or in the Guidance Center.

Eskow Award Scholarship
: Deadline April 5, 2019, based on community service. 

Applications for 
The Vivian Gaunt African Heritage Scholarship are now available in the Guidance Center.  A GPA of 2.0 – 2.9 and consciousness of African heritage are requirements. Applicants outside of the GPA requirements will not be considered. Application deadline is Friday, April 5th.

Essex County School Nurse Association Scholarship: For a student accepted into a 4 year pre-nursing or nursing program. $500 award. Deadline is April 10, 2019.


The P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter A-B of NJ $1000 Memorial Scholarship: Females, Need-Based, 3.0 Minimum GPA. Deadline to apply is April 15th. Submit completed applications to Ms. Iovine in the Guidance Center.

Penguin Random House Creative Writing Award: Current high school seniors at a public high school planning to enroll in a full time study Fall 2019. Please see link for more details. Deadline is April 15, 2019.

Montclair Drifters Scholarship Application: The Montclair Chapter of Drifters supports civic, educational and charitable activities. They are offering a scholarship for deserving students seeking higher education.  Applications are available in the Guidance Center. Deadline to Apply: April 15th.

Citrin Cooperman & Company: Accounting/Business Educational Grant, for senior with declared major in accounting or business planning to attend a four year college/university. Minimum GPA of 2.75 or better.  Deadline April 19, 2019.


Pomptonian Scholarship: Application and one-page essay, describe yourself (see details attached).
Two (2) letters of recommendation are required. Submit all completed applications to your Guidance Department. Pomptonian will award four (4) $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors in the school districts we serve who are going on to college (children of Pomptonian employees are not eligible). All original applications are due to the Pomptonian office by April 30, 2019. We will notify your Guidance Department by May 10, 2019 if a student from your school has been selected. Please click here for application. 

The Earl Estwick, Sr. Trailblazer Memorial Fund offers a non-renewable $500 scholarship for textbooks to seniors with financial need, a B+ average, minimum SAT of 1180 and have partcipated in an organized youth program (scouts, church, etc.) for at least 2 years. Applications are available in the Guidance Center. Deadline: April 30th. 


NJAIHA is offering scholarships as described below and on the NJAIHA website at  Please post this on the Morning Announcements email to parents and students. The New Jersey Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (NJAIHA) is pleased to offer scholarships for the study and promotion of industrial hygiene / environmental health and safety for the 2019-2020 school year. Up to $7,500 is available for award among the selected candidates. Scholarships are available for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students who will be enrolled in the Fall of 2019 in courses leading to a degree in industrial hygiene or allied fields such as occupational/environmental health and safety. Recipients must be enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited college in NJ, or be a resident of NJ if enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited college outside of NJ.

Minimum cumulative GPA is 3.0. Deadline for application is April 30, 2019. The recipients will be invited to attend the June 2019 NJAIHA meeting and make a short presentation to receive their award.

Applicants must provide the following:

  • Completed scholarship application (Download Here or Submit Electronically Below);
  • A statement on a single sheet of paper of why you should be the recipient of the scholarship;
  • A copy or official transcript of records with GPA; and
  • A letter of recommendation from a faculty member or course-related employer, but preferably the student’s advisor.

2019 Montclair Republican Scholarship

The Montclair Republican Club is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior. To be considered eligible for The Montclair Republican Scholarship, an applicant must:

  1. Complete Montclair (NJ) High School in Spring 2019 with plans to enroll in a two- or four-year University or College (including a Community College) or Technical School.
  2. Articulate a libertarian or conservative philosophy, and a commitment to National growth and strength, to the U.S. system of Government, and to private-sector and free-market ideals.
  3. Demonstrate an ability to make a contribution to libertarian or conservativecauses.
  4. Be a U.S. citizen.
  5. Be a resident of Montclair.

The New Jersey Utilities Association (NJUA) annually awards the NJUA Excellence in Diversity Scholarship to a qualified, deserving New Jersey high school senior who meets the eligibility criteria. For the 2019 year, the Association will award two four-year scholarships, each providing $1,500 per academic year to students selected by their Scholarship Review Committee, who will be attending college in New Jersey. NJUA will also award two NJUA Trade and Vocational School Scholarships to qualified students selected by their Scholarship Review Committee, who will be pursuing a trade or vocational degree at an accredited school located in New Jersey. This award will total up to $1,500 per year. Application and information can be found at, or in the Guidance Center.

The Montclair High School All Class Reunion (MHSACR) provides a $1,000 scholarship to a Montclair High School senior, to be used to further their academic pursuits, where there is an opportunity for past MHS grads to help. Our organization hosts a MHS reunion in the summer of even years that is open to ALL classes, as we seek to link each other in the united celebration of our Montclair High School heritage. Donations and fundraisers from classmates cover the cost of the scholarship. Deadline May 10, 2019.

Leslie Krehan Scholarship: $1000 scholarship for mid NJ Youth Soccer Association awarded to two high school seniors who have been associated with MNJYSA during high school. Financial sitaution is not considered. Deadline is May 15, 2019.

Jon M. Pritsch Memorial Golf Scholarship – For any student who has played on their high school golf team and is interested in a career in professional golf. Deadline: Received by June 1st. See link for application.

Wilshire Law Firm Student Scholar Award: Awarded to one outstanding student with $1,000 towards educational expenses.To apply, students must submit a 600 word essay describing the college major they are interested in and why. This essay should talk about how they plan to work in their chosen field to help their community. You can view the link to the scholarship details and application here: Deadline is June 28, 2019

Mesothelioma Essay Scholarship Contest: Deadline to submit is July 20, 2019. This scholarship is a great one for students interested in a medical career. There will be 4 prizes, ranging from $2500 for first place to $500 for fourth place.You can view all of the details about this scholarship here:

Toby Merrill Scholarship Program: High academic performance in high school, high level of participation in extra curricular programs, letter of recommendation that speaks to character, leadership qualities, demonstrated need is considered, and interviews are required. The Peter N. Davis Law Firm is offering a $1000 scholarship to eligible seniors. A minimum 3.5 GPA and an essay are required. Deadline to submit is August 14th. Information on the scholarship can be found here -



U.S. Department of State High School Study Abroad Scholarships

The U.S. Department of State offers merit-based scholarships for American high school students to study abroad from three weeks to an academic year. Previous language study is not required for most programs.
