Qualifications

  1. Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
  2. Valid New Jersey Administrative Certificate with Principal or Supervisor endorsement.
  3. Valid Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) certification.
  4. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university. Master's degree in area of responsibility including educational administration preferred.
  5. Minimum of five years successful experience as a high school interscholastic team coach.
  6. Ability to work effectively with staff, parents, community members and students to maintain and strengthen sound human relations for the improvement of the school program.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work harmoniously in a multicultural, diverse community.
  8. Required criminal background check and proof of US citizenship or legal alien status.
  9. Ability to work on site during the hours required including evenings and weekends and off site as needed for away athletic events.

Job Goal

To use leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills in such a way that will assist the district in coordinating all aspects of the 6-12 PE/Health curriculum and the extracurricular, interscholastic athletics and activities while adhering to Board policy in order to maximize the educational development of each student within this framework.

Performance Responsibilities

  1. Survey and evaluate existing physical education and health curriculum, Grades 6-12, and where appropriate, make recommendations to the Superintendent for effective modifications and/or changes.
  2. Coordinate the delivery of physical education and health instruction through a variety of means including formal observations and evaluations of physical education staff, informal monitoring of their performance and by serving as a resource person in related areas, districtwide.
  3. Assist in the development, revision, and evaluation of 6-12 physical education and health curriculum.
  4. Lead in-service workshops and demonstrations concerned with instructional techniques as well as fundamental principles of a wide variety of physical activities.
  5. Work closely with teachers to ascertain physical education and health curriculum needs and to provide for these needs within the constraints of the budget.
  6. Coordinate, supervise, and evaluate all secondary interscholastic athletic activities, including intramural and co-curricular clubs and activities, to foster physical skills, a sense of worth and competence, a knowledge and understanding of the pleasures of sports, and the principles of fair play and sportsmanship.
  7. Assume primary responsibility for the organization, staffing and scheduling of all co-curricular and interscholastic, athletic events, including fields and gyms.
  8. Encourage and instruct coaches, athletes, students and fans in good sportsmanship.
  9. Arrange yearly HIB, sexual harassment, and crisis management training for all coaches to promote a safe and healthy climate for all student athletes. Turnkey this training with a program for players including reviewing the district code of conduct.
  10. Discuss and address individual student concerns including the discipline, suspension, exclusion or removal of a student from participating in athletics utilizing collective efforts of academic, guidance, or administrative staff as needed.
  11. Foster positive school/community relations by keeping the Superintendent’s Office, administration, and community apprised of athletic events which will include distribution of schedules, announcements of league and county championships, and reporting of all game results to appropriate media outlets.
  12. Prepare recommendations to the Superintendent and high school principal for appointment to coaching positions based on an applicant's experience, knowledge of the sport, and any other criteria established with regard to qualification and job performance expectations.
  13. Periodically observe and supervise all coaches in the conduct of practices, scrimmages, meets, matches, games, and in the locker room and on buses.
  14. Confer with coaches during the season and prepare written evaluations of the coaches' performance at the conclusion of each season, stressing strengths, areas where growth is evident, and recommending alternatives to improve areas of Recommendation for re-appointment or dismissal submitted to the Superintendent/High School Principal.
  15. Evaluate the overall interscholastic sports program annually to determine if the program is responsive to student needs and meets district expectations.
  16. Coordinate with the Buildings and Grounds Department to repair and maintain athletic fields and gymnasiums used for interscholastic sports and make recommendations for the improvement of athletic facilities.
  17. Coordinate with building principals, township officials and township leagues for the use of athletic facilities for interscholastic athletics.
  18. Arrange for school physician or designated medical doctor to be in attendance at all home football games and any other sporting events where medical services on the premises are deemed necessary.
  19. Conduct conferences and in-service meetings with coaches individually or as a group to stress methods of improving coaching techniques and to acquaint them with all league, state and national rules and regulations.
  20. Organize and conduct an 8th Grade Athletic Orientation event districtwide.
  21. Organize and conduct mentoring and orientation workshops for new coaches and ancillary athletic staff.
  22. Arrange for security, supervision and employment of officials for all home interscholastic games, scrimmages and school sponsored activities when deemed This includes accurate accounting for officials payments, police hired within budget, and general responsibility for same.
  23. Arrange for and coordinate transportation in conjunction with the district's transportation coordinator and, when necessary, lodging and meals.
  24. Assist in the implementation of the physical and academic requirements for eligibility for participation in all sports, and verify same for each athlete, including parental permission.
  25. Maintain permanent records for each sport such as wins and losses, outstanding records, and individual awarded varsity letters, honors, and athletic scholarships.
  26. Maintain a permanent file of athletes including their medical examinations, insurance forms, parent consent forms, etc.
  27. Supervise and responsible for the proper handling of all funds including collecting, depositing and accounting of all ticket sales and fund raising events.
  28. Coordinate and consolidate coaches' recommendations for annual budget to be submitted to the high school principal.
  29. Oversee the operation of the athletic program within the district budget.
  30. Oversee the cleaning, storage, refurbishment and care of all athletic equipment.
  31. Maintain and prepare inventories and establish procedures for the security of all athletic equipment.
  32. Prepare and/or supervise the timely preparation of all assigned reports, records, lists and other paperwork appropriate for the administration of the athletic program.
  33. Perform supervisory duties within specifically assigned project areas as designated by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.
  34. Enforce all Board policies, administrative directives, NJSIAA codes and state laws/regulations as it pertains to physical education and athletics, particularly scholastic eligibility of all sports participants including age and semester grade requirements.
  35. Perform, as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee, additional or alternate duties which are within the scope of employment and certification.

Terms

12 month as contracted, salary and benefits as determined by the Board.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board's policy on evaluation of certified staff.
